DetailsIf you love the look of cable knits but prefer to crochet, these add-on crochet cables are the perfect answer. Instructions for knitted cable projects often present the cable portions in panels to make the instructions easier to follow. These crochet cables use a similar method that involves twisting or braiding strips worked in simple combinations of basic crochet stitches and attaching the strips to panels or flat pieces of crocheted fabric. Choose from 20 creative cable styles with charts for sizing your projects. There also are five pretty fashions to help you get familiar with the technique: a cowl, handbag, messenger bag, funnel neck pullover, and cardigan.

I am a highly advanced crocheter and enjoy making Aran afghans, so I am constantly looking for cable crochet patterns to give myself a challenge. This book has so many intricate-looking cables that it will keep any experienced crocheter happy, but many of them appear easy enough that an intermediate or advanced beginner crocheter should be able to learn them.
Unlike most cables that are crocheted into a panel from top to bottom, these are long, narrow strips from 2-9 rows that are either twisted (2 strips) or braided (3-5 strips), and then whipstitched to an existing crocheted panel. There are 11 cables made with a different stitch or combination of stitches and rows; 5 cables with bobble or other decorative feature; and 4 cables made with multiple braids. Each pattern has the necessary number of chains to crochet to make the strip in up to 8 lengths from about 20” to about 72”; the patterns also include the number of stitches for the base panel that the cable is attached to.
I don’t care for the two sweaters, but they do show how you can combine the cables with other sweater patterns to make something very stylish. The cowl is a great variation for a scarf, and the purse and bag show how the cables can be used for larger items, including afghans.
