  • Stitch A Beaded Garden

Have you got a big New Year’s Eve planned? Not me! We’ll just be sitting around, watching old movies, eating, and trying to stay awake till anyway...

Right now, I’m looking out my back door, dreaming of warmer temperatures, wishing my flowers were blooming, and leafing through pattern books with floral designs in them. How does your garden grow? Probably not so great right now thanks to the cold weather, so why not bring some florals indoors with Sharon Maxwell Kendall Perry’s new pattern book—Stitch a Beaded Garden?

Featuring 18 designs charted for beading and cross stitch, Sharon’s designs offer up a delightfully different alternative to everyday cross stitch. Stitched over two threads on 28-count evenweave fabric, each project uses colorful seed beads to create floral samplers and mini motifs right from the garden! You’ll find such favorites as zinnias, carnations, clematis, bleeding hearts, sweet peas, pinks, mallow, peonies, waterlillies, and more...she even includes a simple backstitch alphabet for signing and dating your projects! Take a peek at a few of these pretty blooms! They’re sure to brighten up a cold winter’s décor!

    Meet Sharon Maxwell Kendall Perry!
Sharon Maxwell Kendall Perry is a New Zealander with a fondness for flower gardens, historic samplers, and antique beadwork. “When traveling overseas with my husband,” she says, “I was drawn to some of the old beadwork in the museums. It gave stitching another dimension and made it come alive in a quite different way. Gradually it dawned on me: All of these things could be combined—embroidery, beadwork, samplers, and gardens. Since then, I have spent many happy hours designing and stitching.”

Hope each and every one of you has the happiest of New Years!

  • Halloween Cross Stitch

I have a weird habit of wanting to work on a project during the holiday season that goes along with the theme of that holiday (whether I actually manage to finish or not always remains to be seen…). With Halloween on its way, if you’re like me or if you need a little gifty to make, I thought you might like some spooky cross stitch inspiration. Check out some of my favorite Leisure Arts designs:

Love the front cover design, I Love Halloween, from Gail Bussi’s Sample the Seasons. This book also includes designs for Easter, the 4th of July, Thanksgiving, and Christmas!

The other cross stitch pattern book I’ve turned to in recently is The Best of Terrie Lee Steinmeyer which includes 140+ cross stitch designs for all occasions. Take a peek at the cute Halloween patterns:

What could be better than candy corn, ghost, pumpkins, and a friendly witch’s cat for getting your Halloween celebration off to a fun start? (Love the kitty in the pumpkin!) These little designs make great treats for co-workers (and they’re small enough that I might actually finish them in time for Halloween!).

  • Christmas Cross Stitch

Let’s celebrate Christmas in July with little tiny floss x’s on fabric. Ok Cross Stitchers, grab your needles ’cause I’m going to showcase some designs that I’m sure you’re going to want to get started on asap:

If you’re yearning to cross stitch up a bunch of Christmas ornaments, you might like Ornaments Galore, Book 1 (with 50 designs) and/or Ornaments Galore Book 2 (with 48 designs) by Ursula Michael.

Do you intend to stitch stockings for all your loved ones? The prettiest cross stitch stocking books I’ve seen in a long time are Donna Kooler’s Ultimate Stocking Collection and Donna Kooler’s Second Edition Stocking Collection. Book 1 features 15 projects and Book 2 has 14!

Want a little more than Christmas in your pattern books?

If your looking for some great basic designs for bibs, florals, samplers, bookmarks, and alphabets—one of which just happens to be Christmas-themed, take a peek at The Best of Cross Stitch Basics featuring 108 designs. Woodland Peace Sampler by Polly Carbonari would make a lovely holiday gift.

Sample the Seasons by Gail Bussi offers up the pretty Christmas designs–Noel and Joys of the Season along with additional samplers for Easter, July 4th, Halloween, and Thanksgiving.

The Best of Terrie Lee Steinmeyer includes 140+ cross stitch designs for all occasions—baby, all the seasons and holidays, and more! I really love some of her Christmas projects—

    Happy Christmas Cross Stitching!

  • All Creatures Stitched and Small

I’m going to have to take up cross stitching again because I’m loving the designs in Lori Markovic’s new pattern book—All Creatures Stitched and Small! Lori’s done such a marvelous job of catching these little animals in cross stitch that I can‘t even decide which to stitch first.

Look at the White Cat! I like stretching cats…

Take a Trek in the Woods with this band of woodland friends!

Three Dogs-a-Leaping (and isn’t that just what all dogs do?)!

Sachi the Elephant–Along with cats, I also seem to have a thing for elephants. They keep showing up in my collections. I very well may have to add Sachi to the mix!

A Leaping Cat, a tiger, love the cats!

And what about this fun Noah’s Ark silhouette? How could an animal fan resist it?

6 Designs—I’ve definitely got some cross stitching coming up in my future.

    Crochet Your Patriotism!

Celebrate the flag with this Stars and Stripes afghan by Anne Halliday from our Afghan Lover’s Collection. It‘s worked in strips, so it makes a nice take-along project.

Somebody expecting a new baby in July? Here‘s a couple of red, white, and blue baby afghans to crochet:

  • Wedding Week: Keepsakes & Quickies in Cross Stitch

Cross stitchers automatically reach for needle and floss when they hear the word wedding. Am I right? If so, I’ve got some project suggestions for you for this wedding season.

If a true heirloom, keepsake design is what you have in mind, you might want to try your hand at Through a Mother’s Eyes or Through a Father’s Eyes. Both are based on paintings originally created by artist Paula Vaughn, and both are charted in full color.

If you’re looking for a basic wedding sampler that will be semi-quick to finish, take a look at United in God’s Love from the Leisure Arts Praying Hands series.

The 11 designs feature simple borders and such classic inspirational quotes as:

“And the two shall become one.”

“This is my beloved and this is my friend.”

“Love one another as I have loved you.”

“Behold, how good and pleasant it is to dwell together in unity.”

“Love one another with a pure heart.”

And including (as seen on the front cover) the lovely verses from 1 Cor. 13: “Love is patient, love is kind, and is not jealous…”

  • Fast-To-Finish Cross Stitch

Maybe you have a long-term cross stitch project in the works—one of those designs destined to become a family heirloom. I’ve got a couple of those going with no end in sight. The busy world we live in with jobs, kids, significant others, etc…doesn’t always leave much time to indulge our creativity. How about some wonderfully wordy cross stitch designs that can be finished in an evening? Does that sound good? Try the Leisure Arts Stamp ’n Stitch technique.

We’ve combined cross stitch with rubber stamping and a few embellishments (if you want) to create little works of art that you can finish in no time. Just stamp the background, cross stitch a word, add a purchased or custom frame, and you’re done. I love the projects in the supporting publications—Nature, Reflections, and Inspirational. They’re lovely, easily manageable designs that would make great gifts or add a special touch to any home décor.

There is even a Stamp ’n Stitch book for holidays and one especially for kids. In Holidays, you’ll find 8 extra-quick projects, including designs for New Year’s, Valentine’s, Easter, July 4th, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, and Christmas. Kids will take youngsters step-by-step through the technique to prepare them for making any of the 6 awesome projects with themes like the beach, skateboarding, flowers, friends, sports, and camping.

Quick & Easy—that’s sometimes what it’s all about!
