Crochet 101 [Part 2] The Basic STITCHES

Welcome back to Crochet 101! If you missed Part 1, you can find it HERE. It has all of the basics from supplies, how to hold your hook, slip knot and the beginning chain....everything you need to know to start crocheting!

Join Kristi Simpson as she guides us through the basic stitches of crochet that are the foundation of all patterns. Single crochet, half double crochet and double crochet. You will use these stitches to create the majority of all projects, so take time to master these skills.

How to Single Crochet

Now that we've learned the very basics, I want to teach you a STITCH! This is called the single crochet stitch. It is abbreviated 'sc' in patterns. Watch how easy it is to complete this stitch or follow these easy steps to create the single crochet.

Note: When working in a chain: use the back ridge of the chain. When working in stitches, use both loops unless otherwise instructed.

  • Insert your hook in the chain and yarn over from back to front.
  • Pull yarn back through. You will have 2 loops on your hook.
  • Yarn over and pull the yarn through both loops to complete the stitch. You will have one loop on hook.

Practice! Practice! Practice! This will be a main stitch in your crochet life.

How to Half Double Crochet (hdc)

The half double crochet stitch is just a smidge taller than the sc and only one more step so it's just as easy to complete. This is a staple stitch, so practice along with this video!

  • Insert your hook in the chain and yarn over from back to front.
  • Pull yarn back through. You will have 2 loops on your hook.
  • Yarn over and pull the yarn through both loops to complete the stitch. You will have one loop on hook.

How to Double Crochet (dc)

The double crochet stitch is double the size of a single crochet and is used in a multitude of projects. It is not difficult to complete and this video will be your go-to as you are learning. Practice! Practice! Practice!

  • Yarn over and then insert your hook in the chain and yarn over from back to front.
  • Pull yarn back through. You will have 3 loops on your hook.
  • Yarn over and pull the yarn through the first 2 loops only. You will have 2 loops on hook.
  • Yarn over and pull through both loops to complete the stitch. You will have one loop on hook.

Now that you know these basic stitches you can crochet hats, scarves, blankets and more! Stay tuned for next week's post on gauge, reading a pattern and more!
